Alexander “AJ” Silva
Discover the tragic story of Alexander "AJ" Silva, a teenager from Houston, Texas who disappeared despite being under court-ordered GPS monitoring. Learn about the limitations of GPS technology and the Silva family's fight for justice in this in-depth blog post, and listen to the full story on the And Then They Were Gone podcast.
Uncovering the Tragic Disappearance of Alexander "AJ" Silva: How GPS Monitoring Failed
As the world becomes increasingly connected, it's natural to assume that technology would make it easier to track down missing individuals. However, the case of Alexander "AJ" Silva, a teenager from Houston, Texas, proves that this isn't always the case.
AJ was arrested in early 2021 and was required to wear an ankle monitor while he awaited trial. It was while he was wearing that device and being monitored by the Harris County court system that he disappeared and met what witnesses say was a horrific fate. But how was it possible for a county to lose someone when they had the ability to track his exact location?
The answer lies in the limitations of GPS monitoring. While the technology can provide real-time location data, it is not foolproof. Ankle monitors, for example, rely on a combination of GPS and cellular technology to transmit location data. If a person were to enter an area with limited cellular coverage or tamper with the device, their location would no longer be accurately tracked. In addition to technical limitations, there is inadequate monitoring and follow-up when it comes to defendants who are on pre-trial monitoring.
The Silva family is now fighting for justice, calling for an investigation into how the county was able to lose track of their son despite his court-ordered GPS monitoring. They also hope to raise awareness about the limitations of GPS monitoring and the importance of using multiple forms of surveillance in cases like AJ's.
It is a tragic reminder that technology alone cannot solve all of our problems. It is important to remember that surveillance technologies, like GPS monitoring, have their limits and should not be relied on as the sole means of tracking an individual. It also highlights the importance of multiple layers of surveillance, as well as the need for thorough investigations and accountability when things go wrong.
The Silva family's fight for justice serves as a call to action for all of us to continue working towards solutions that will help keep our loved ones safe.

We’ve all heard of people who have used children as pawns in a divorce. Maybe they’re fighting on visitation or child support payments because they don’t want to give their soon-to-be ex what they want. But in some extreme cases, the animosity and need for control can be destructive. Charles Vosseler needed to be in charge. He needed to decide where his two sons, 3-year-old CJ, and 2-year-old Billy, were at all times. So when it was clear that his marriage to his wife, Ruth, wasn’t working out, Charles hatched a plan.
On October 9, 1986, this plan culminated in him kidnapping his children and keeping them hidden for decades. Over the past 30-plus years, Ruth has never given up on her children. Today, at age 75, she is still out there fighting to keep their names and their faces in the public consciousness, in hopes of finally bringing them home.

Daisy Colon packed Giovanni’s backpack with clothes and dropped him off in nearby Lynn, Massachusetts. But when she came to pick him up again, her little boy was gone.
An investigation was launched, and police even eventually secured a confession. The problem? Investigators didn’t believe it. Daisy believes that Ernesto hit their son somewhere, but nearly 15 years later, no one has found him. What happened to Giovanni Colon-Gonzalez?

Tabitha Tuders
On the morning of April 29, 2003, Bo Tuders woke his daughter Tabitha up for school and put her favorite TV show on. He said goodbye as he left for work. 13-year-old Tabitha always got herself off to school, and this day was no different. Tabitha left her home that morning and walked toward her bus stop. But then she disappeared. Police initially misclassified Tabitha as a runaway, but her family knew in their hearts that she didn’t leave on her own. Was Tabitha abducted by a stranger, or by someone whom she thought she could trust?

Tyler Stice
On June 21, 2016, 20-year-old Tyler Stice packed his lunch and left for work. The community college student was living at home and working to save up money in hopes of eventually attending Northern Arizona University. That morning, Tyler got into his prize possession, a black Ford Mustang, and drove off. But he didn’t make it to work that day. Four days later his car would be found in the Hualapai mountains, but there would be no trace of Tyler.
Tyler’s family had been seemingly followed by tragedy for years, and it wouldn’t stop with his disappearance. It’s been over six years since Tyler was last seen, and his case is filled with theories, with some wondering if his family’s checkered past could have contributed not only to what happened not only that day, but also to the events that followed.

Ebonee Spears
Sources, photos and videos for our episode on Ebonee Spears.
It was the beginning of the Martin Luther King Junior holiday weekend in Wilmington, North Carolina, and 30-year-old Ebonee Spears was not doing well. Ebonee, who had been diagnosed with Lupus the year before, had seemingly been having negative reactions to her medication. The bright, friendly mother of one was acting disoriented and paranoid. Things got so bad, that her parents contemplated having her involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital.
The next evening, January 15, 2016, Ebonee told her parents she wasn’t coming over for a planned dinner. That night, when her boyfriend arrived at her home, Ebonee was gone. No one has seen Ebonee after that day. After six years of misinformation and muddled timelines, investigators and Ebonee’s loved ones are no closer to finding out where she went after she walked away.
If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Ebonee Spears, please contact the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3686.
Si tiene alguna información sobre la desaparición de Ebonee Spears, comuníquese con el Departamento de Policía de Wilmington al 910-343-3686.

Found: the Clouse Family
In the late 70s, a young couple set off from Florida to Texas to start their new life together. 17-year-old Tina Linn Clouse was madly in love with her new husband, Harold Dean Clouse, so she didn’t hesitate to uproot her life and move to Texas when he got a new job.
Their families were supportive, but became concerned when they started hearing from the couple less and less. Then, in October of 1980, communication stopped completely. It would take over 40 years for the Linn and Clouse families to learn what happened to Tina and Dean, but even when those answers were revealed, a huge one wasn’t: what happened to their baby?
The investigation into the murders of Holly’s biological parents, Tina and Dean Clouse, is ongoing. If you or anyone you know has information about their deaths, please contact the Texas Attorney General’s Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit at coldcaseunit@oag.texas.gov.
